After Daenerys is sold into marriage to Khal Drogo, they eventually fall in love. When Khal is murdered, Daenerys hatches three dragons by having her petrified dragon eggs placed on Drogo's funeral pyre, before she walks into the flames to claim them. Her dragons are the first seen in the world in hundreds of years, earning her the epithet Mother of Dragons.
